Richard joined the Army in 1984 as a musician in The Band of The Life Guards, serving as a clarinettist for 23 years, before posting to the Royal Military School of Music as a Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) to manage the recruiting of musicians.
He joined CVQO in 2010 as an Operations Manager overseeing the Level 2 BTEC in Music. In 2015, he became the CVQO Southern Area Manager covering London and the Home-Counties. He has a small, dedicated and experienced team who are responsible for the management and training of Cadet Adult Volunteers and Civilian Staff in the delivery of vocational qualifications ranging from BTEC Level 1 to City and Guilds Level 7 qualifications, but primarily a BTEC Level 2 in Teamwork and Personal Development (TPD) and also BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Music to over 500 Cadet Units in Southern England. The team also provides delivery of the Level 2 TPD BTEC direct to Cadets.
Richard lives in Kent and is married with two teenage children. He is a keen horseman and skier. Since joining CVQO, Richard continues to perform as a clarinettist and conductor as an Army Reserve Musician with the Royal Yeomanry and is a Trustee for the Regimental Association.
